The Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8) in the constellation Sagittarius at 4000-6000 light years away. Another great example of an emission nebula rich in character with so much beauty to show off! It’s also very bright and is faintly visible to the naked eye under dark skies and even more impressive when viewed through a telescope. The bright core goes by the name “Hourglass Nebula” and is a very active star forming region.
The image here is the second of two SHO Hubble Palette representations of this nebula.
