The Swan Nebula (Messier 17, Omega Nebula) is a bright emission nebula embedded in the rich star fields of the milky way in the constellation Sagittarius. In fact, it’s just bright enough to be seen with the naked eye under a dark (non-light polluted) sky! It’s shape and structure are very distinctive among nebulas with many twists and turns plus a region of dark nebulosity popularly called the Fish’s Mouth. The central region is bright in all narrowband filters, which gives rise to a whiter look compared to the surrounding reds and yellows. Represented in in SHO Hubble palette.
