The full moon as you'll never see it - a mosaic of the waxing moon.
Imaging or viewing a full moon through a telescope is always a bit of a disappointment. This is because, from our perspective on Earth, the Sun is shining directly onto the moon from behind us so the lack of shadows creates a low contrast surface. To see the surface details, it’s always best to view the moon during the waxing (or waning) phase along the day/night boundary called the terminator. With that in mind, I set about imaging the moon along the terminator during the waxing stage and then stitching together the images (117 in total) to create what looks to be a full moon but has the details and contrast of a waxing moon! The full-sized image is ~200 megapixel with resolution estimated to be under five kilometers (selection of clos-up crops shown).
To add to the character, many of the lunar features (craters, Mare, Montes, Dorsa, etc) and lunar landers (Luna (Soviet), Surveyor (USA), Apollo (USA), Chang'e (China)) have been labelled. Happy exploring!
